Gotham FC captured the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup with a 2-0 victory over Kansas City Current on Friday in Columbus, Ohio. The match marked the first professional women's soccer game ever played in the state, drawing 11,369 fans to Scotts Miracle-Gro Field. Esther González opened scoring from the penalty spot in the 37th minute after Current captain Lo'eau La Bonta fouled Jaelin Howell in the box.

Rookie Jordynn Dudley sealed the win in the 79th minute, stripping Kansas City defender Kayla Sharples before finishing 1-v-1. Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amoros praised his team's mentality and collective effort on both sides of the ball. The Current entered as NWSL Shield winners, having dominated the 2025 season with record points and victories, but played without star forward Temwa Chawinga due to injury.

Kansas City applied early pressure, with midfielder Croix Bethune hitting the crossbar in the 8th minute. Despite creating chances, the Current couldn't find an equalizer. Both teams sit at 21 points in league play, trailing San Diego Wave FC by four points. Gotham's Challenge Cup triumph adds to their growing trophy collection after last year's NWSL Championship victory.

The venue will host a NWSL expansion team in 2028, signaling Ohio's growing investment in women's soccer. Gotham's ability to perform in high-stakes matches sets them apart as genuine contenders for the 2026 NWSL title.
