Hansi Flick said he would “miss” Marcus Rashford after the Manchester United forward returned from a loan in Spain, as Barcelona opted not to sign him permanently. Flick noted Barcelona were still open to a lower fee or a second loan, but the additions of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi appear to have closed the door on the England international.

The former Barcelona boss added, “I appreciate working with him. He is a fantastic player and a fantastic person. The team miss him, I will miss him, but it is life.” He praised Gordon’s impact and said he was “on fire” with Barça.

Rashford is expected back at Carrington in early August to prepare for the new Premier League season, which kicks off with a visit to Hull City on Aug. 22. United may pursue up to €40 million ($46 m) for a permanent deal but prefer not to see him join a rival.

Rashford posted a farewell message, thanking the club and wishing them success: “I will take many special memories with me. Visca el Barca.”
