FIFPRO Demands FIFA Protect Iran Women's Team Safety

Global players' union FIFPRO is demanding that FIFA, the AFC, and the Australian government ensure the safety of Iran's women's national team players following their Women's Asian Cup campaign. The players' futures have been cast into uncertainty after a crowd of protesters delayed their team bus following a 2-0 defeat to the Philippines, chanting "let them go" and banging on the vehicle.

FIFPRO Asia/Oceania president Beau Busch expressed grave concern about the players' wellbeing, noting they've been unable to make contact with the squad since the tournament. The players made headlines by not singing Iran's national anthem in their opening match against South Korea, similar to the men's team's silent protest at the 2022 World Cup. Conservative television presenter Mohammad Reza Shahbazi labeled them "wartime traitors" for this action.

The situation has intensified amid Middle East conflict, with vast swathes of airspace closed following US and Israeli attacks on Iran. Busch said FIFPRO had warned organizers about potential asylum claims before the tournament but claimed no human rights risk assessment was conducted. The union is working to ensure players have agency over their next steps, whether that means staying in Australia or returning home safely.
