FIFA World Cup Plan: $40M Funding Deadline

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has set a September 19 deadline for member federations to approve a private investment plan, which could unlock up to $40 million in funding per association. The proposal, backed by Thrive Capital, aims to create a $20 billion FIFA subsidiary to manage competitions, potentially making a $10 billion funding package available.

This plan faces significant backlash, with UEFA reportedly considering options like a World Cup boycott due to a perceived lack of consultation and governance. UEFA stated the World Cup is not "an asset to trade" and expressed deep concern over the proposal's lack of transparency and process.

If approved, the funding would be available from January 1, 2027, with each member association potentially receiving $20 million in one-off Fast Forward funding and $20 million in FIFA Forward development funding for the 2027-30 cycle. Rejection of the plan would mean access to the previously planned $2.7 billion expansion of the Forward program.
