FIFA Permits Rainbow Flags for Egypt-Iran World Cup Clash

FIFA confirmed that fans can bring rainbow flags into Lumen Field for Friday's Group G match between Egypt and Iran. This decision follows protests from both nations' football federations, who argued that such displays clash with their cultural and religious values. FIFA maintains the event remains inclusive for all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Seattle Pride Fest had already designated June 26 for celebration before the official draw. While Egypt's federation sent a letter categorically rejecting homosexuality-related activities, FIFA president Gianni Infantino clarified that no official "Pride Match" exists. He noted that community events organized by external groups in the city are separate from the match itself.

This stance marks a shift from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where officials removed rainbow hats from Wales fans. FIFA previously defended Qatari cultural norms and blocked European captains from wearing "One Love" armbands. Now, the governing body permits these flags under the World Cup 2026 Stadium Code of Conduct provided they follow specific rules.

FIFA controls only the stadiums and official fan zones in host cities. The organization has no formal authority over independent city-wide events. This decision prioritizes the stadium code over the specific objections raised by the competing national federations.
