Cesc Fàbregas has dismissed suggestions that he could be in line to replace Michael Carrick as Manchester United manager, describing the speculation as disrespectful.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder's comments come amid ongoing discussion about the future of the Old Trafford dugout. Speculation linking Fàbregas to the role has circulated in the football press, but he has made clear he does not regard it as a serious proposition while Carrick remains in charge.
Carrick, a former United midfielder, has been at the helm and is entitled to be judged on his own record without the distraction of constant speculation about successors. Fàbregas's remarks underline a broader frustration among those in the game that managers in charge are being discussed as temporary placeholders before their tenure has run its course.
ESPN Soccer reported the comments as part of its coverage of the Manchester United managerial situation. The debate over who might take the job next is likely to continue, but for now Fàbregas has made his position clear: suggesting he could step into Carrick's shoes is, in his view, a lack of respect for the man currently doing the job.
