Championship Rejects VAR for Next Season

Championship clubs have voted against introducing Football Video Support (FVS) for the upcoming season, despite calls from several managers. The system, which would have allowed each coach two reviews per game, was presented to clubs by Professional Game Match Officials at the EFL's annual meeting last month.

While Goal Line Technology will continue in the second tier, clubs showed strong opposition to any video review system due to concerns about cost and impact on supporters. Recent months saw managers like Norwich's Philippe Clement and former Bristol City manager Gerhard Struber advocate for VAR implementation, citing improved decision-making.

The rejection means the Championship remains without video review technology, unlike second divisions in Spain, Italy and Germany. The decision comes despite FVS being trialled for two years and recently expanded to the Canadian Premier League, where tactical use of challenges has raised concerns about game flow and integrity.
