Davies Set for World Cup Knockout Debut After Injury Recovery

Alphonso Davies will finally take the field for Canada's World Cup knockout match against South Africa Sunday at SoFi Stadium, ending a strategic gamesmanship ploy by coach Jesse Marsch. The Bayern Munich star was used as a decoy during group play, with Marsch publicly claiming he was available despite not being ready from his hamstring injury.

Davies suffered three hamstring injuries in four months, including during the Champions League semifinals, leading to careful rehabilitation protocols. He missed Canada's three home games in Toronto and Vancouver, and even tried talking his way into the Switzerland match before Marsch refused. The left back scored Canada's first World Cup goal in Qatar 2022 and has been eager to contribute on home soil.

Marsch wouldn't specify whether Davies starts or his playing time, but confirmed he's genuinely ready now. This marks Canada's third World Cup appearance and first knockout-round opportunity. Davies previously suffered a torn knee ligament at the same venue in March 2025, making his return particularly meaningful.

With Canada's tournament hopes potentially hanging on Davies' fitness, his availability provides a significant boost. The team lost to Switzerland in their group finale, sending them to Los Angeles instead of staying home in Vancouver. Davies' return gives Canada their best chance at advancing past South Africa and deeper into the competition.
