The president of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, announced on X that the 2030 World Cup will be a 64‑team tournament. He wrote, “In 2030, the World Cup comes to Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, a great opportunity for football, to celebrate the World Cup Centenary with a 64‑team tournament.”

The 2030 edition will be hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal, with centenary matches in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. No official FIFA confirmation yet, though the story is spreading.

On July 12, FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed that the organisation will discuss expanding the men’s World Cup to 64 teams after 2026. He told Swiss broadcaster Blue Sport that the expansion would let every nation dream of participation, noting the rising quality of teams worldwide.

The 2026 World Cup, won by Spain, was the first to feature 48 teams and 104 matches. A 64‑team format would double matches to 128. Infantino said FIFA will examine the possibility in relevant committees after the tournament.
