Temwa Chawinga, the two‑time NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner, has signed a new deal with the Kansas City Current that keeps her in the squad through 2029. The extension uses the league’s new High Impact Player rule, making it one of the most lucrative contracts in the NWSL. Chawinga scored 20 goals in her debut 2024 season, a league record.

Kansas City General Manager Ryan Dell said the club prioritized the extension, citing Chawinga’s on‑field dominance and community influence. She finished last season with 15 goals, earning consecutive MVP and Golden Boot titles, and has seven goals this campaign, tied for second in the league. The deal also follows the Current’s $850,000 trade of Ally Sentnor to Angel City FC.

The High Impact Player rule lets teams pay up to $1 million above the $3.7 million salary cap, provided the player’s cap hit is at least 12% of the team’s ceiling. Chawinga’s contract, now the first in Kansas City to benefit from the rule, solidifies the Current’s core as the 2025 Ballon d'Or shortlist spotlights her global standing. The extension locks in a proven goal‑scorer for the next four seasons.
