Tim Bezbatchenko has been named president of global soccer for Haslam Sports Group, returning to Columbus Crew after steering the Crew to MLS Cup titles in 2020 and 2023. He will oversee both the MLS club and a new NWSL expansion side slated to debut in 2028.

Bezbatchenko will build the NWSL roster and staff, naming a first general manager and head coach before the 2028 season. He reports to Dee and Jimmy Haslam and works with business operations chief Mary Shepro and Crew GM Issa Tall. His return comes after the Crew fired head coach Henrik Rydström last month.

The Crew sit 13th in the 15‑team Eastern Conference, while the NWSL’s expansion adds the 18th franchise alongside Atlanta. Bezbatchenko’s global experience at Black Knight Football and Toronto FC will guide the new team’s launch. The Haslams praised his “long‑term investment” in Central Ohio soccer and his family’s return home.

With a new NWSL club on the horizon, Columbus aims to cement its status as a soccer hub. The dual‑team model mirrors Atlanta’s recent hiring of Mauricio Culebro for both MLS and NWSL sides. Bezbatchenko’s return signals a commitment to competitive ambition and community unity in Central Ohio.
