Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo has revealed how anxiety and depression forced him to take a mental health break from football last November. The Uruguay international, who struggled for 18 months before seeking help, asked the club for time off following a red card against Chelsea in the Champions League.

Araújo described the Stamford Bridge incident as a turning point, explaining that his struggles extended beyond football to family and personal issues. He traveled to religious sites in Bethlehem and Jerusalem during his break and spent time with family in Uruguay. The 25-year-old has since returned to action, making substitute appearances in January before scoring on his first start in the Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Albacete.

During his absence, Araújo received overwhelming support from teammates and rivals alike, with several players reaching out to share similar experiences. The defender praised Barcelona's sporting director Deco, president Joan Laporta, and manager Hansi Flick for their understanding and support throughout the process. Araújo, who has made 195 appearances for Barcelona since 2018, says he now feels like a different person and can enjoy playing football again.
