Red Wings Captain Dylan Larkin Requests Trade Amid Playoff Drought

Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade, according to ESPN sources, marking a stunning development for the Original Six franchise. The 29-year-old Michigan native, who rose through the U.S. National Team Development Program and played college hockey at Michigan, now controls his destination through a full no-trade clause that extends through next season.

The rift between Larkin and Detroit management stems from testy contract negotiations in 2023 and the team's failure to make meaningful moves during Larkin's tenure. The Red Wings have now missed the playoffs for ten consecutive seasons, ending a historic 25-year postseason run. Larkin signed a long-term deal worth $8.7 million annually through the 2030-31 season, but growing frustration boiled over when he publicly criticized the team's inactivity at the 2025 trade deadline.

Larkin has been remarkably consistent offensively, posting 30-plus goals and 67 points in each of the last five seasons while establishing himself as one of the league's premier defensive forwards and penalty killers. However, injury concerns persist - he's completed a full 82-game season only twice in his career. The 2025-26 campaign featured another late collapse despite Detroit holding first place in the Eastern Conference as late as January 24.

General Manager Steve Yzerman, a franchise legend, faces mounting pressure to rebuild. He acquired goalie John Gibson last summer and added defenseman Justin Faulk and forward David Perron at the 2026 deadline, but those moves failed to satisfy Larkin or propel Detroit back into playoff contention.
