New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer captured the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year, becoming the first unanimous winner in 33 years. The 18‑year‑old surprised fans during an interview on ABC’s "Good Morning America", where he was joined by family and former Islanders star Matt Martin.

Schaefer poured his emotions into a heartfelt dedication to his late mother, Jennifer, who died of breast cancer in 2024. He announced a partnership with the Islanders Children’s Foundation and Northwell Health to launch a child‑support center for cancer patients and their families, a project that reflects his commitment to community.

On the ice, Schaefer finished the season with 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points, tying Hall of Famer Phil Housley for the most points by an 18‑year‑old defenseman and matching Brian Leetch for rookie‑defenseman goals. His performance helped the Islanders vie for a playoff spot, and his rapid ascent even earned him consideration for Team Canada’s Olympic roster.

The Professional Hockey Writers Association awarded him all 198 first‑place votes, a sweep last seen in the 1992‑93 season with Teemu Selanne. The award follows finalists Ivan Demidov and Beckett Sennecke in the voting, underscoring the depth of rookie talent in the league.
