The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Bowen Byram and forward Jordan Greenway from the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday, sending the No. 4 and 45 draft picks plus Louis Crevier to Buffalo. Byram, 24, posted career highs with 11 goals and 42 points in 82 games last season while earning $6.25 million annually.

Byram joined Colorado as the fourth overall pick in 2019 and won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022. The presence of Cale Makar and other established defensemen made him expendable, leading to his trade to Buffalo during the 2023-24 campaign. There, he helped anchor a young defensive corps alongside Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power that ended the franchise's 14-year playoff drought this past season.

The trade gives Buffalo approximately $21.299 million in cap space after shedding Byram's $6.25 million salary and Greenway's $4 million cap hit, both entering contract years. For Chicago, moving their first-round pick represents a shift in strategy for a rebuilding team that has held multiple first-round selections since 2022 but will wait until the second round to make their initial choice.

Byram joins Connor Bedard and a promising young core that includes Frank Nazar, Oliver Moore and Artyom Levshunov. The Blackhawks needed defensive help desperately, ranking last in the NHL for high-danger chances allowed and near the bottom in offensive production. Byram's puck-moving ability addresses both areas immediately.
