Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov will represent Finland at the upcoming Ice Hockey World Championship after missing the entire NHL season with a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. The two-time Stanley Cup champion received full medical clearance from Panthers doctors at his end-of-season checkup, marking his return to competitive hockey after surgery.

Barkov had initially hoped to play for the Panthers this season, targeting a late March return after beginning skating in January. However, Florida fell out of playoff contention, and he adjusted his recovery timeline accordingly. The Panthers endured a brutal injury-plagued season, losing nearly 500 man games to injury, with Barkov's absence as their top shutdown center proving particularly costly.

The 28-year-old Finnish center described missing the Olympics as one of the season's most difficult aspects, calling it a lifelong dream. He'll now join Panthers teammate Anton Lundell on Team Finland, with the World Championship beginning May 15. Barkov expressed excitement about returning to game action, saying he's looking forward to his first tournament match after months of rehabilitation.
