Google Play is receiving its most significant AI transformation yet, introducing Ask Play and Play Shorts to revolutionize how users discover and interact with apps. These updates, unveiled at I/O 2026, leverage Gemini to create more intuitive app discovery experiences across Android and web platforms.

Ask Play enables users to ask natural language questions about apps directly from Play Store listings, moving beyond keyword searches to conversational discovery. Meanwhile, Play Shorts delivers TikTok-style vertical videos showcasing app interfaces and functionality before download. Gemini will also surface apps tied to over 450,000 movies, TV shows, and sports streams, helping users quickly locate content availability.

Developer tools receive substantial upgrades too, including Gemini-powered translation capabilities for app listings across multiple languages. A new console feature allows developers to localize content using CSV files or Google Sheets. Additionally, Google introduces subscription payment retry functionality that grants low-risk users continued access during payment failures.

Google AI Studio now supports building Android apps through text prompts, streamlining development workflows. This comprehensive update positions Google Play as a more intelligent marketplace, though the success of Play Shorts will depend on whether users embrace another short-form video feed alongside existing social platforms.
