Babcock hired by Oilers after NHL clearance

The Edmonton Oilers confirmed Mike Babcock as their new head coach on Tuesday, days after the NHL cleared him to return. Babcock, 63, last led the Toronto Maple Leafs before being dismissed in 2019 and resigned from the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023 amid a controversy over requesting players’ phone photos.

An NHL‑Players’ Association probe examined the Columbus episode, interviewing former Blue Jackets players via videoconference. The league concluded that even under the most unfavorable interpretation, no basis exists to bar Babcock from employment. The NHLPA called the allegations “very concerning” but said they expect him to meet the league’s standards.

The Oilers dismissed Kris Knoblauch after two straight Final runs ended with a first‑round loss this season. Bruce Cassidy talks fell apart when Vegas blocked an interview, pushing Edmonton to Babcock. They also hired former Kings interim coach D.J. Smith as an assistant, reuniting him with Babcock from Toronto.

Management expects Babcock to chase the Oilers’ first Stanley Cup since 1990 and persuade captain Connor McDavid to stay, after his two‑year extension kicks in post‑2027‑28. Babcock arrives with 700 wins, a 2008 Cup and rare international trophies, yet his past bullying claims shadow the hire. The Oilers now face the challenge of translating his résumé into playoff success.
