Titans pick Carnell Tate to boost Cam Ward's arsenal

Titans receivers coach Greg Lewis erupted in the draft room when the team selected Ohio State All‑American Carnell Tate with the No. 4 pick. The move surprised many, as the slot was expected to host a defensive prospect, but Nashville aimed to give rookie quarterback Cam Ward a premier target. Lewis’ applause underscored the belief Tate fits the franchise’s offensive vision.

During Thursday’s first OTAs, Ward immediately targeted the rookie, noting Tate’s “great hands, ability to win in man coverage and stride.” Tate’s nine touchdowns at Ohio State included five of 40 yards or more, a rarity for a team that logged only three deep passes last season. General manager Mike Borgonzi praised his contested‑catch radius and burst off the line.

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll plans to employ motion and bunch sets to free Tate against press coverage, a weakness that limited the Titans’ 2025 receivers to a 17% completion rate in such situations. Assistant GM Dave Ziegler said the consensus vision places Tate as an X receiver who can separate quickly. Ward expects an “explosive year” as the duo attacks downfield.
