Rams Secure Defensive Star Garrett in Heavy‑Picks Trade

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay declared the franchise would act aggressively to secure two‑time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. The deal, finalized Monday, exchanges Garrett for linebacker Jared Verse, a 2027 first‑round pick, a 2028 second‑round pick and a 2029 third‑round pick. The trade mirrors the 2021 Matt Stafford swap that sent Jared Goff to Detroit.

McVay stressed the rarity of a player like Garrett and compared the move to the high‑stakes acquisition of Stafford. Garrett, who posted a 23‑sack season—the most since 1982—learned of the possibility a week ago and said the news was a surprise. He noted the weight of a no‑trade clause he had to consider.

The Rams also weighed the loss of Verse, who earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2024, and the cost of giving up three future picks. General Manager Les Snead said the initial offer only included picks, prompting Browns GM Andrew Berry to insist Verse be added. McVay praised Verse’s professionalism during the trade talk.

Garrett will wear No. 95, a number formerly worn by Poona Ford, and will join a defense that has already seen a potential return from retired Aaron Donald. McVay said Donald could still impact play at 35. The Rams’ next step is to integrate Garrett into its scheme, with his arrival poised to boost pass rush potency.
