Panthers Coach Canales Hands Playcalling to OC Idzik

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales has relinquished playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Brad Idzik, marking a significant shift in the team's offensive approach. The decision came without pressure from general manager Dan Morgan or owner David Tepper, according to Canales, who emphasized it was his idea.

Canales had previously been adamant about maintaining playcalling responsibilities through the season's end. However, multiple factors influenced the change, including his desire to focus more broadly on coaching the entire team rather than being consumed by offensive play design. The move allows Canales to interact more with officials and explore opportunities across all three phases of the game.

Idzik, who has been the primary designer of Carolina's offensive systems, will now call plays in regular-season games for the first time. The Panthers recently hired Darrell Bevell as associate head coach and offensive assistant, bringing in someone with extensive playcalling experience from his 25-year NFL coaching career, including time with the Seattle Seahawks where he and Canales first connected.
