NFL Replay Errors in Early Games Raise Staffing Concerns

NFL coaches expressed concern this week after league officials revealed that five replay review errors occurred during the 2025 season, with four happening in 1 p.m. games. Troy Vincent, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, acknowledged the mistakes at the scouting combine, attributing them to the high volume of games during that window.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton, a member of the NFL's competition committee, said he was surprised by the revelation and questioned the league's replay staffing. New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel also raised concerns, suggesting the league needs to evaluate staffing levels at the replay headquarters in New York to ensure all games receive equal attention.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch proposed another factor: the limited camera angles available for early games compared to prime-time broadcasts. He suggested requiring teams to install fixed cameras in stadiums to ensure uniformity. With the NFL officials' collective bargaining agreement expiring in May, the league faces pressure to address these replay issues before the 2026 season.
