Lions Sign Isiah Pacheco to Bolster Backfield

The Detroit Lions have agreed to a deal with Isiah Pacheco, adding the former Kansas City Chiefs running back to pair with Jahmyr Gibbs in their backfield. The move comes after the Lions traded David Montgomery to the Houston Texans last week, creating a void at the position that Pacheco will fill.

Pacheco, 27, served as the Chiefs' starting running back for much of the past four seasons. Last year, he rushed for 462 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games before Kansas City signed Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III as their new lead back. The Chiefs drafted Pacheco in the seventh round of the 2022 draft, and he quickly developed into a key contributor, helping Kansas City win two consecutive Super Bowls.

Pacheco's career took a significant turn in Week 2 of the 2024 season when he suffered a broken fibula in his right leg, forcing him to miss 10 games. Since returning from injury, he hasn't matched his 2023 production when he rushed for a career-high 935 yards and nine total touchdowns. Last season marked his final year of his rookie contract, during which he failed to record a single rushing attempt of 20 or more yards.
