Former Tennessee Titans assistant coach Dave McGinnis died Monday at age 74, the franchise confirmed. Hospitalized since early March, he passed after receiving last rites, surrounded by family. Known affectionately as “Coach Mac,” McGinnis left a legacy that spanned four decades of NFL coaching and later broadcasting for the Titans.

McGinnis’ résumé featured stints as Chicago Bears linebackers coach, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator and head coach, and assistant head coach for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. Over 30 years he mentored eight Hall of Famers, including Pat Tillman, whose heroic sacrifice after 9/11 remains a poignant footnote to McGinnis’ career.

Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk and President Burke Nihill praised his loyalty, optimism and personal touch, noting he “invested in people” and made everyone feel valued. After retiring from coaching in 2016, he joined Titans Radio in 2017, delivering color commentary that kept fans connected. His death marks the loss of a rare football lifer.
