Free agent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is considering retirement at age 34, sources told NFL Network on Monday. The veteran spent the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams backing up Matthew Stafford and was still viewed as the top option to fill that role for the 2026 season before Kirk Cousins became available. His potential retirement would mark the end of a 12-year NFL career that included two Super Bowl appearances.

At the NFL's annual meeting last month, coach Sean McVay said the Rams were considering Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins for the backup quarterback position. Cousins has since signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, leaving Garoppolo as the primary candidate to return. Last season, Garoppolo appeared in three games but didn't attempt a pass behind a healthy Stafford.

The veteran quarterback began his career with the New England Patriots in 2014, backing up Tom Brady before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. Over 12 seasons, Garoppolo completed 67.4% of his passes for 15,828 yards with 96 touchdowns and 52 interceptions across 85 games. He also spent the 2023 season with the Raiders before being released and started the Rams' 2024 regular-season finale, completing 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
