Jim Kelly, the former Bills quarterback and Hall of Famer, revealed he suffered a stroke earlier this spring and spent several days in the hospital. Speaking at the ribbon‑cutting for the new Highmark Stadium, the 66‑year‑old said he now feels “really good,” though his vision and hearing remain impaired.

Kelly has battled cancer multiple times, undergoing jawbone surgery in 2013, chemotherapy in 2014, and further operations in 2018 to remove oral cancer. Recent scans returned clean, and he told reporters everything was good. Despite lingering health issues, the former quarterback remains in western New York and looks forward to the 2026 opener.

At the ceremony, Kelly praised the excitement surrounding the new venue, noting fans will feel the stadium’s roar. He said the 2026 regular‑season home opener against the Detroit Lions on September 17 will be a special event for players and supporters alike. The announcement comes as the Bills prepare to launch their season in a modern arena.

Kelly’s recovery highlights the resilience he displayed during his playing days, when he led the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls. He received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance in 2018. The former quarterback’s return to the public eye underscores his ongoing connection to the franchise and the community that shaped his legacy.
