Herbert Refines Footwork Under McDaniel to Cut Release Time

Justin Herbert told reporters in Los Angeles that new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has reworked his footwork this off‑season. During OTAs, Herbert threw a weighted green ball instead of a football while drilling release mechanics. He said he will devote one day a week to footwork drills, aiming to reduce his release time and keep defenses guessing for the upcoming season ahead.

McDaniel’s scheme stresses anticipation and quick releases. He presented Herbert with a slide deck of several hundred plays, illustrating how concepts could shift from a 2.4‑second window to longer timing. Last season Herbert posted six touchdowns to three interceptions when he released within 2.4 seconds, but efficiency dropped in the 2.4‑3.5 second range for his offensive effort overall consistency in the season ahead.

Herbert believes the new focus will blunt the pass rush after a season where he was the league’s most hit quarterback. With Pro Bowl tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt back, he expects McDaniel’s rapid‑release philosophy to translate into fewer sacks and quicker yardage. The Chargers look to tighten their offense before the playoffs and improve overall team performance through the season ahead.
