Giants Camp: Harbaugh Focuses on Run Defense

The New York Giants' training camp at The Greenbrier is underway, with new coach John Harbaugh making run defense the top priority after last season's historically poor 5.3 yards per carry allowed. Veteran nose tackle DJ Reader has been a force in the middle, and first-round pick Arvell Reese brings a physical approach. "It's just technique and mentality," outside linebacker Brian Burns said. "We just really put an emphasis on being in our gap but also having a mean mentality when it comes to the run."

Several players missed practice, including OLB Abdul Carter (hand), CB Greg Newsome II (knee), CB Dru Phillips (knee), WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee), C John Michael Schmitz Jr. (concussion), and G/C Lucas Patrick (knee). Kickers combined to make all 13 attempts, with Ben Sauls 7-of-7 and Dominic Zvada 6-of-6.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers showed his best form yet in individual drills as he recovers from a knee injury, making sharper cuts and running crisper routes. Harbaugh noted the next step is for Nabers to work his way back into practice more. The offense had its best day, with a final drive featuring tight end Theo Johnson and running back Dante Miller, capped by a 2-yard touchdown from quarterback Jaxson Dart to wide receiver Darius Slayton.

Harbaugh gave the camp an A+ grade, praising the focus and team building. "I think we got a lot better," he said. "We're much further along than we were when we started."
