Dolphins keeping Malik Willis focused on learning, not leadership

The Miami Dolphins want Malik Willis to focus on learning their new offense rather than stepping into a leadership role immediately. New coach Jeff Hafley told reporters this week that while Willis will eventually be the face of the franchise, his priority should be mastering the scheme and building chemistry with teammates. The Dolphins signed Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million contract this offseason, believing he can be their franchise quarterback during this rebuild under general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.

Willis was ESPN's top-ranked free agent despite starting only three games for the Green Bay Packers last season. His performances were impressive: completing 18-of-21 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown against Baltimore, adding 60 rushing yards and two scores. This marked major growth from his uninspiring rookie season with the Tennessee Titans in 2022. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik praised Willis's arm talent, mobility and the energy he brings to the locker room.

Hafley wants Willis concentrating on becoming the best quarterback and teammate he can be, leaving leadership to the coaches for now. Willis understands the approach, saying trust must be earned through execution on the field, not appointed by title.
