DJ Pickett sticks with No. 5 amid Jayden Daniels dispute

LSU cornerback DJ Pickett is maintaining his decision to wear the No. 5 jersey, despite pushback from Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Daniels' attorney has informed LSU that the university can no longer use his name, image, and likeness, citing the Tigers' decision to allow Pickett to wear the number Daniels used during his 2023 Heisman-winning season.

Pickett, a sophomore, stated he has worn No. 5 his "whole life" and was promised the number by LSU. His father, Damien Pickett, expressed support and noted that Coach Lane Kiffin has been fully supportive. The dispute centers on the Daniels family's belief that the number would remain a part of Jayden's LSU legacy.

Daniels, now with the Washington Commanders, acknowledged issues between his team and LSU but emphasized his focus on the NFL season. Former LSU coach Brian Kelly indicated he had promised Pickett No. 5 during recruitment but hesitated to issue it without Daniels' consent. The situation draws parallels to Joe Burrow's No. 9 jersey, which has not been worn since his 2019 Heisman season.
