Calvin Johnson Says Puka Nacua Will Break His Receiving Record

Calvin Johnson believes his single-season receiving record won't stand much longer, and he's pointing to Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua as the likely successor. Speaking at his charity golf event, Johnson praised Nacua's talent, noting he has quarterback Matthew Stafford and the skill to surpass the mark if he stays healthy.

Johnson set the record in 2012 with 1,964 yards in just 16 games, breaking Jerry Rice's previous mark. Despite the NFL expanding to a 17-game season in 2021, no receiver has eclipsed his total. Last season, Nacua posted 1,715 yards in 16 games, putting him within striking distance. Other receivers like Cooper Kupp (1,947 yards in 2021) and Justin Jefferson (1,809 in 2022) have come close but fell short.

Johnson initially expected Jefferson to break the record, but criticized the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback decisions involving J.J. McCarthy and Sam Darnold. He believes Jefferson, entering his sixth or seventh season, needs to accomplish the feat soon while still in his prime.

The record chase adds intrigue to the upcoming season, with Nacua positioned as the favorite to finally surpass Johnson's mark in what could be a historic campaign for the young receiver.
