Browns Propose Expanding NFL Draft Trade Window

The Cleveland Browns have proposed a rule change to allow NFL teams to trade draft picks five years into the future, expanding the current three-year limit. The proposal was announced Wednesday as one of only two team submissions for consideration at the upcoming league meetings. The NFL currently allows trading picks up to three years ahead, compared to a seven-year window in the NBA.

This change would give teams more flexibility in managing their future rosters as the league has seen increased trading activity with a new generation of general managers. The Browns argue that extending the window would create a more active trade market and provide greater roster flexibility. Recent trades already show this trend, with six first-round picks from the current draft having been traded, including Denver's recent deal sending its first-rounder to Miami for receiver Jaylen Waddle.

The proposal comes alongside another from the Pittsburgh Steelers to make permanent the league's trial rule allowing up to five phone or video calls with players during the free agent negotiating period. Any rule changes require approval from at least 24 of the 32 NFL teams.
