Bills Exclude O.J. Simpson from New Stadium Legends Display

O.J. Simpson will not be included among Buffalo Bills legends at the new Highmark Stadium, the team announced Friday. Bills president of business operations Pete Guelli cited an organizational decision that Simpson is 'not a fit to display inside our new stadium and family circle.' The franchise will honor other Wall of Fame members in the family circle area outside the stadium.

Simpson's name previously appeared on the Bills' Wall of Fame since 1980, when he became the first inductee. The team debated his inclusion as recently as this spring, with designers preparing for both scenarios. Despite his football achievements, including becoming the first NFL player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season with 2,003 in 1973, the organization chose to distance itself from the former star.

The decision reflects Simpson's legal history rather than his athletic accomplishments. He was acquitted of murder charges in the 1994 deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, but a civil court ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages to the victims' families. When Simpson died of cancer in April 2024, the Bills notably did not issue a statement acknowledging his passing.

This move represents a clear break from the team's historical ties to Simpson. While his Pro Football Hall of Fame status remains intact, the Bills have effectively removed him from their institutional memory at the new facility, signaling that off-field controversies outweigh on-field achievements in their commemorative decisions.
