San Francisco announced the passing of Hall of Fame tight end Charle Young, 75, who helped the 49ers capture their first Super Bowl. The team learned of his death from his wife, and no cause was released. Young’s 13‑year NFL career spanned Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, with his breakout years occurring in Philadelphia and quickly established himself as a premier pass‑catcher.

Drafted sixth overall out of USC in 1973, Young earned Pro Bowl honors his first three seasons and was a first‑team All‑Pro as a rookie with 55 receptions for 854 yards and six touchdowns. After a stint with the Rams that culminated in a 1979 NFC title, he joined the 49ers in 1980, lining up with Joe Montana.

Young posted 418 catches for 5,106 yards and 27 touchdowns over 187 games, ranking seventh among tight ends in receptions and 11th in yards at retirement in 1985. His postseason résumé includes the first playoff touchdown of the Walsh‑Montana era and a score in the 1981 Super Bowl win. The 49ers’ dynasty will remember him as a foundational playmaker.
