Aiyuk threatens to join Commanders if 49ers cut him

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk took to Instagram on Wednesday, declaring that a release from the 49ers would see him sign with the Washington Commanders “tomorrow.” He posted a football bearing the Commanders logo, followed by graphics proclaiming the team the best in the league and labeling himself the “best WR in the world.” The videos underscore his public push for a move.

Aiyuk’s frustration stems from a year‑long feud with San Francisco. The 2024 season left him with a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus, and the team voided the guaranteed portion of his $120 million extension after he missed rehab. San Francisco placed him on the reserve/left‑team list in December, then kept him under contract while scouting a trade partner.

General manager John Lynch hinted in January that Aiyuk has likely played his last snap for the 49ers, yet the franchise has not cut him, waiting until veterans report to training camp on July 25. Aiyuk continues to follow former Arizona State teammate quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Commanders on Instagram, fueling speculation that a reunion could revive his once‑All‑Pro production in the NFC East.
