Rozier indicted in $100k NBA betting scheme

Federal prosecutors filed a superseding indictment Thursday charging Terry Rozier with accepting a $100,000 bribe to influence his performance for the Charlotte Hornets. The allegation says Rozier used a lingering leg injury to sit after nine minutes in the March 23, 2023, loss to New Orleans, posting five points, four rebounds and two assists. Bettors who wagered the under on his stats collected roughly $258,700.

Rozier denies any wrongdoing, and his lawyer Jim Trusty moved to dismiss the case, arguing the government overreached. The indictment also names co‑defendant Deniro Laster, who allegedly relayed Rozier’s withdrawal plan to a network of gamblers. In October, six men—including former NBA player Damon Jones—were charged with wire fraud and money‑laundering; Laster and another participant have since pleaded guilty.

The scandal arrives after Rozier was traded to Miami in January 2024 and then waived in April, leaving his future uncertain. For the Hornets, the case underscores vulnerability to integrity breaches and could prompt tighter monitoring of player injuries. The league now faces renewed pressure to safeguard betting integrity amid expanding sports wagering. NBA officials said they will review protocols immediately.
