NBA Refs to Resume Headsets for Live Games

The NBA will have referees wear headsets with earpieces and microphones for live play again starting Tuesday. This test runs through February 12th, just before All-Star Weekend. Refs previously used them only during stoppages and replay reviews, not during active game action.

The league told teams the first phase improved officiating accuracy and game flow. New headsets aim to fix audio issues from earlier tests, matching technology used in the NFL, MLS, and top European soccer leagues. The NBA has trialed this system since 2022 at G League and Summer League events.

This move could streamline communication between officials and the replay center, potentially speeding up reviews. For fans, it might mean fewer delays and clearer explanations for calls. The league will evaluate results before deciding on a permanent implementation after the All-Star break.
