The departures came via separate trades, with Dort and Wiggins heading to the Atlanta Hawks and Joe joining the Detroit Pistons. Thunder executive vice president Sam Presti orchestrated the moves to shed salary cap space, acquiring seven future second-round picks in return. This financial flexibility allowed Oklahoma City to retain center Isaiah Hartenstein on a three-year, $75 million deal.

Despite the championship loss in the 2026 Western Conference Finals to the San Antonio Spurs, Holmgren expressed confidence in the organization's direction. He emphasized his commitment to improving during the summer, averaging 17.1 points and 8.9 rebounds last season while earning his first All-Star selection.
