The Atlanta Hawks have benched 2024 first-round pick Zaccharie Risacher in favor of veteran guard CJ McCollum, marking only the third time in 120 games Risacher hasn't started. The move came during Atlanta's 115-104 victory over the Nets, where McCollum contributed 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and a steal in 32 minutes.

Coach Quin Snyder explained the decision stems from the team's most effective closing lineup, which features McCollum alongside Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Dyson Daniels. This group has posted a net rating 10 points higher than any other combination. The Hawks have been trending toward this lineup since acquiring McCollum from Washington in a recent trade.

Despite the benching, Snyder emphasized his continued faith in Risacher's development, noting the adjustment doesn't reflect any diminished belief in the young forward. The Hawks have undergone significant roster changes this season, with nearly half the team joining in the past two months, including McCollum, Corey Kispert, and injured Jonathan Kuminga. Snyder acknowledged the constant balancing act between developing young talent and winning games, stating the decision isn't permanent and could change as the season progresses.
