Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic will return to the team on Friday after receiving multiple injections in Spain for his Grade 2 left hamstring strain. The No. 4-seeded Lakers face the No. 5-seeded Houston Rockets in Game 1 of their playoff series Saturday, though Doncic's availability remains uncertain. Doncic suffered the injury April 2 against Oklahoma City Thunder and was ruled out for the remainder of the regular season.

The Lakers went 3-2 without Doncic and Austin Reaves, who also suffered a Grade 2 left oblique strain in the same Thunder game. LeBron James stepped up during their absence, earning Western Conference Player of the Week after averaging 24.0 points, 9.7 assists, and 6.0 rebounds. Doncic finished the season averaging a league-best 33.5 points but appeared in just 64 games, missing the 65-game threshold for regular-season awards.

Doncic's agent, Bill Duffy of WME, has petitioned the NBA for a "special circumstances" exception, citing Doncic's two-game absence in December to be present for the birth of his daughter in Slovenia. The NBA typically requires 65 games for award eligibility, but Doncic's case presents a unique situation. His return timeline remains unclear as the Lakers prepare for their playoff matchup against Houston, with the team needing his scoring prowess against a Rockets team that finished the season strong.
