This allows both sides roughly the first 20 games to assess the early season performance of the team and the 10-time All-Star before finalizing a potential deal.

Davis became eligible for an extension worth up to four years and $275 million. Delaying negotiations provides Davis an opportunity to evaluate the Wizards' competitiveness, talent acquisition strategy, and future plans. Conversely, the Wizards can monitor Davis' performance, health, and the team's overall progress after the initial part of the season.

The Wizards, who have struggled in recent years, acquired Davis and Trae Young to expedite their rebuild. They aim for the duo to elevate the team to playoff contention and mentor young players like AJ Dybantsa and Alex Sarr. The team also recently extended Young for $212 million and added Khris Middleton and Deandre Ayton.
