Argentine police arrested two Chilean citizens suspected of leading a transnational crime ring targeting U.S. athletes. The arrests occurred at Retiro bus station in Buenos Aires, with authorities confirming the suspects targeted homes of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Juan Martin del Potro. Ignacio Zuniga Cartes and Bastian Jimenez Freraut were detained in a joint operation between Argentine and Chilean authorities.

The sophisticated burglary ring used publicly available information and social media to track athletes' habits, employing technology to bypass alarm systems and disable security cameras. Stolen items included jewelry, millions of dollars in cash, trophies, and medals taken while athletes were away. The NFL issued security alerts following incidents involving Mahomes and Kelce, highlighting the growing threat to professional athletes.

The suspects remain in Chile awaiting extradition proceedings requested by the U.S. In February 2025, seven Chilean citizens faced federal charges in Florida, with Alexander Esteban Huaiquil Chavez pleading guilty and awaiting sentencing June 11. Three others remain charged with burglarizing Joe Burrow's home in Ohio, with their case pending in federal court.
