The Philadelphia 76ers are promoting Jameer Nelson to executive vice president of basketball operations, making the former NBA All-Star the No. 2 executive under new president Mike Gansey. Elton Brand will not return as general manager but is taking a new role with the franchise and parent company Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment.

Nelson, a Philadelphia-area native with a 14-year playing career, joined the 76ers as a scout in 2020 and has risen through the organization. Assistant GM Prosper Karangwa has agreed to a multiyear contract extension after receiving interest from rival teams, adding stability to the front office during this transition period.

Gansey was hired to replace Daryl Morey, who led the 76ers to five playoff appearances in six seasons with a 270-212 record. Philadelphia has not advanced beyond the second round during Morey's tenure and has not reached the conference finals since 2001, leaving the franchise searching for breakthrough success.
