Umpire injury forces crew shuffle in Braves-Marlins game

Plate umpire Alfonso Márquez exited in the inning of the Atlanta Braves vs. Miami Marlins after a foul ball struck his mask. The ball came off a 95‑mph fastball by Marlins right‑hander Max Meyer and bounced off Dubón's hit. Márquez removed his mask, clutched his jaw and was escorted from the field. He received a check before heading to the clubhouse.

The incident forced a 16‑minute delay while officials restructured the crew. Jonathan Parra shifted to first, Lance Barrett to second, and Mike Estabrook took over behind the plate. The Braves won 5‑3, tightening the NL East race. The pause also gave Braves reliever Tyler Anderson a chance to warm up, and he secured the final three outs.

Clubs will review protocols, and committee said it will assess mask standards after the incident. Márquez, 54, has called MLB games since 1999 and earned full‑time status in 2000, making his abrupt departure a rare sight for a crew chief. While the Braves capitalized, the Marlins’ bullpen struggled to regain momentum.
