Twins’ Abel Undergoes Arthroscopic Surgery, Rotation in Trouble

Minnesota Twins right‑hander Mick Abel will undergo arthroscopic elbow surgery after a setback in his recovery. Dr. Keith Meister advised the move more than two months after Abel first hit the injured list. The Twins had planned his return to the rotation Sunday, but soreness in a bullpen session forced a halt.

Abel, 24, posted a 3.98 ERA in four outings this season, throwing 14 straight scoreless innings before elbow inflammation halted his streak on April 14. He was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies for closer Jhoan Duran and minor‑league catcher Eduardo Tait just before last season’s trade deadline.

Twins’ starting rotation has shrunk further: left‑hander Pablo López is out for the season after elbow surgery, right‑hander Bailey Ober misses three weeks with inflammation, and Kendry Rojas was optioned to Triple‑A after a brief start. Abel’s surgery adds another blow to Minnesota’s pitching depth.

With Abel’s procedure scheduled, the Twins will not know his return until post‑op recovery. The loss compounds a season already marred by injuries, leaving the club scrambling for reliable arms. Fans will watch the roster moves closely as the team seeks to stabilize its pitching core before the stretch run.
