Trevor Story could miss up to 10 weeks after sports hernia surgery, the Red Sox announced Friday. Dr. William Meyers performed the procedure at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia. Story, who started 41 of Boston's first 43 games, told reporters in Atlanta he was weighing his options but acknowledged surgery would sideline him for an extended stretch.

Story enters the break batting .206 with three homers and a .547 OPS that ranks 165th among qualified hitters. Six errors have compounded his struggles. Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have filled in at shortstop, while interim manager Chad Tracy considers moving second baseman Marcelo Mayer to the position if Story's absence stretches long.

Story now joins Roman Anthony (right wrist sprain) and Garrett Crochet (left shoulder inflammation) on the IL. Boston enters a series with Minnesota fourth in the AL East, with depth becoming a real problem.
