The Boston Red Sox activated reliever Garrett Whitlock from the 10-day injured list Saturday after a brief absence due to right elbow inflammation. Whitlock, who went on the IL on Aug. 13, is 6-1 with a 2.05 ERA in 45 appearances this season. "A high level back end arm, that's one of the premier setup relievers in the game," interim manager Chad Tracy said before the team's day-night doubleheader against the Yankees. To make room on the roster, the Red Sox optioned reliever Wyatt Olds to Triple-A Worcester.

Whitlock's return bolsters a bullpen that has been without him for parts of the past two weeks. He previously missed time earlier this season due to left knee inflammation sustained on May 24 against Minnesota. His last outing was on Aug. 9 against the A's, where he allowed a tying double to Jonah Heim in a 4-3 loss.

In other injury news, Roman Anthony (sprained right wrist) and Trevor Story (sports hernia) continued their rehabilitation with another rehab game for Worcester. The Red Sox are evaluating their progress before deciding on potential activations, either Sunday or when they return home to face Seattle next week.
