Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez saw his historic shutout innings streak end at 50⅔ on Wednesday night, falling just shy of 51 innings against the San Diego Padres. After breezing through six scoreless frames, Ty France doubled and Jackson Merrill singled to break the spell in the seventh. Despite the end of the streak, Sánchez departed with Philadelphia leading 3-1, and the Phillies held on for a 3-2 victory.

The left-hander's 50⅔-inning stretch ranks third all-time since 1920, behind only Orel Hershiser's 59 innings in 1988 and Don Drysdale's 58 in 1968. This marked the longest shutout streak ever by a left-handed pitcher, surpassing legends like Carl Hubbell and Bob Gibson. Sánchez had not allowed a run since April 30, working at least seven shutout innings in five consecutive starts while holding hitters to a .153 average.

Entering the game with a 6-2 record and MLB-best 1.47 ERA, Sánchez earned NL Pitcher of the Month honors for May after going 4-0 with 45 strikeouts and just three walks over 39 innings. The former Ray, traded to Philadelphia in 2019 for Curtis Mead, continues building on his 2025 Cy Young runner-up season. His consistent dominance has transformed the Phillies' rotation into one of baseball's most reliable units this year.
