Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani cemented his place in Japanese baseball history Friday night, setting a new benchmark for consecutive games reaching base. Ohtani slapped a fifth-inning single off Texas Rangers pitcher Kumar Rocker, stretching the remarkable streak to 44 games. This accomplishment moves him past the legendary Ichiro Suzuki, whom Ohtani has often cited as an idol growing up in the sport.

Suzuki’s previous record for a Japanese-born player stood at 43 straight games, a feat he achieved back in 2009 while playing for the Seattle Mariners. Ohtani’s current run began late last season, encompassing the final 31 contests before the current 13-game stretch in 2026. This sustained production demonstrates Ohtani's elite plate discipline early in the year.

Ohtani has already claimed another of Suzuki's previous records. During the 2024 campaign, Ohtani obliterated the single-season stolen base mark for Japanese players, swiping 59 bases compared to Suzuki's 56 from 2001. The Dodgers star continues to rewrite record books across multiple facets of the game, establishing himself as an exceptionally unique talent.

This latest achievement reaffirms Ohtani’s value as a consistent offensive threat anchoring the Dodgers lineup. Reaching base nearly every night keeps pressure on opposing pitchers and drives runs across, a testament to his consistent approach at the plate through early April.
