Mize Out, Tigers Roster Shuffles Amid Injury Storm

Detroit’s rotation takes a hit as starter Casey Mize is placed on the 15‑day IL with right adductor inflammation, retroactive to May 28. The move follows a May 27 start where he exited after four scoreless innings. The injury echoes a previous groin issue that sidelined him earlier this season this year.

Manager A.J. Hinch says the new flare is less severe than the Atlanta episode and that Mize’s return will be a “slower week.” With a 2.27 ERA over nine starts, he remains Detroit’s bright spot in a rotation that has lost Tarik Skubal, Kenley Jansen, and Justin Verlander to injury.

To keep the bullpen afloat, the Tigers activated reliever Beau Brieske from the 60‑day IL, while moving Brant Hurter to the 60‑day list. Brieske, who missed spring training with a left adductor strain, joins a staff that lost closer Kenley Jansen in the same game Mize exited for the team.

With 15 players on the IL—including ten pitchers—Detroit’s 4‑18 run since May 3 has plunged the club to the bottom of the AL Central. Hinch rejects excuses, noting that losing half the roster hurts “feels bad” and “doesn’t look good.” The Tigers now face a steep climb to regain playoff footing this.
